For my Honour's project, I decided to focus on design in healthcare which first led to research existing barriers in the health care sector and patient needs. Bringing hospital care to home was a theme found several times in my research which is why I wanted to focus on this area and the development of portable devices for patient care. Research shows there is a significant shift towards homecare settings which is boosting the demand for portable devices. Therefore, I wanted to follow market potential by identifying current and future changing industry ecosystems to create human-centered solutions that anticipate evolving needs. There is a huge demand with developing such human-centered solutions that improve access to care and the overall well-being of patients.
Introducing the Portable Suction Drain, a medical device designed to help patients with lung cancer or other conditions relieve breathlessness at home. This design solution aims to increase self empowerment through innovating the care delivery system to allow patients more access, control and comfort over their care.
